Weingut Georgiberg

Weingut Georgiberg, Berghausen

Styria, a Southern region of Austria known unofficially as “the green heart”, is famous for its vineyards. The warmer climate makes for excellent conditions for producing wine and attracts many tourists for this reason alone. This well-established winery has produced award winning varieties, blending old and new practises to produce the very best red, white and rose wines. The winery contains an on-site restaurant serving regional cuisine, with experts on hand on offer advice on the best wine pairing.

Weingut Nikolaihof Wachau

Weingut Nikolaihof Wachau, Mautern an der Donau

Wachau is not just one of Austria’s most beautiful areas, but also home to some of the finest vineyards – the home of Austria’s most famous white, the Gruner Veltiner. A UNESCO world heritage site and next to the River Danube, the conditions in this region are perfect for producing wine – with an ideal climate and soil quality. This winery claims to be the oldest in Austria and therefore is well worth a visit. To this day, the grapes are harvested by hand and stored in ancient oak casks.

Trippel

Vineyards in the spring

This Carinthian winery offers tours of their cellar and a tasting session with an expert Thursday to Sunday, with the chance to also sample some traditional, regional cuisine. Self-described as a “a small, but fine feel-good paradise away from mass tourism in an idyllic location amidst its vineyards”, this serene area is perfect for weekends away in a lesser-known area of Austria. The main varieties that are produced at Trippel are Pinot Noir, Zweigelt and Carinthia’s only Merlot. Why not try them all?

Weingut Umathum

Traditional methods are used at the vineyard

This homely and welcoming winery is located in Burgenland – a state in the Eastern part of the country with a strong legacy for producing wine. Directly next to the beautiful Lake Neusiedl and the Weinidylle Nature Reserve, this is a stunning place to enjoy some of Austria’s finest produce and most attractive scenery. Weingut Umathum is most famous for its red wines, with the varieties of Zweigelt, St. Laurent and Blaufränkisch being the most popular. Summer is one of the best times to visit, as you can enjoy a hike before or after visiting.

Fritz Wieninger

Wine from Vienna is counted among the finest in Europe, with a vineyard culture no other European capital city can rival and a legacy dating all the way to 1132AD. There are almost 200 wine inns (known locally as Heurige) in and around the city, therefore it is hard to pick just one to visit – Fritz Wieninger comes as highly recommended as any. Run by a small family that has a legacy for producing excellent quality wine, you should feel in safe hands. Their star wine, the Gemischter Satz, is a must-try.
