The Abaco Islands – a group of barrier cays in the northern Bahamas – are all about laid-back living. Things move slowly here and that means you should, too. Take the opportunity to explore the islands by boat, following the pace of the winds, rather than your watch. These restaurants are all ideal spots if you’re approaching by sea thanks to wow-worthy waterfront locations.

Green Turtle Club Restaurant

Restaurant, Caribbean
Established in 1964, Green Turtle Club has retained a classic charm that feeds through into their restaurant. The service is friendly and professional and guests have the option to stay for breakfast, lunch or dinner. This is the place to get freshly made pancakes, lobster benedict and granola yogurt parfait before a day on the water. The club is on a private harbor, just 10 minutes’ walk to the beach.

Pete’s Pub & Gallery

Pub, Fusion
A prime spot in the beautiful Little Harbour, this oceanside restaurant is unassuming and extra friendly. Play the ring toss game while you wait for your food or look out for turtles poking their heads above water. Time your visit right and you can be there for the monthly wild boar roasts. Otherwise, enjoy casual pub food including seafood gyros and burgers.

With a deck that leads onto the beach, you can fit in a game of volleyball before you eat at this neighborhood grill spot. With a menu of casual fish dishes including grouper fingers, fried snapper and fish tacos, it’s the perfect place for a light bite. A highlight are the frozen dessert cocktails, perfect for cooling down after a hot day on the sand.

Firefly Bar & Grill

Bar, Seafood
Take your dinghy for dinner at Firefly Bar & Grill on Elbow Cay and dock right outside. Despite the impressive location, the menu at this oceanside restaurant is unfussy, featuring a blend of international and Bahamian dishes. As always in the Abacos, seafood reigns supreme, so opt for the catch of the day or fresh lobster for the best experience.

Colors by the Sea

Restaurant, Fusion
Head to this oceanside restaurant for open-air dining right on the water. Soak up the fun atmosphere and sample relaxed dishes such as Bahamian mac and cheese and the seafood platter before moving onto the cocktail menu for favorites including mojitos and margaritas. This restaurant is right on Marsh Harbour, so it’s especially convenient if you’re in the area for sailing or yachting.

Tranquil Turtle Beach Bar

Bar, Fusion
This beach bar keeps things simple with a pared-back menu that’s basic but really good. Order the catch of the day and get it fresh off the grill with sweet potato fries on the side. If you have a sweet tooth, don’t miss the banana pancakes and fruity cocktails. The deck is built over the water, so you’ll hear the waves lap beneath your feet as you eat.

Pineapples Bar and Grill

Restaurant, Fusion
Grab a fresh coconut to sip beside the water while you kick back in a private hammock at this beachfront restaurant. If you want a little more activity, you can have a go on the tree swings while you wait for your fresh conch fritters to be prepared. You might also be lucky enough to catch live music during your meal. If you’re arriving by boat, it’s just a short walk up the hill from the nearby dock.

Located on Elbow Cay, at one of the narrowest parts of the island, this restaurant is flanked by water. Admire views of the Atlantic and the Sea of Abaco while you enjoy fresh seafood including blackened mahi-mahi with coconut rice. There’s plenty of space for boats and dinghies nearby, so it’s a good spot for dinner if you’ve spent the day sailing.
